5 Senior Living Misconceptions
Contrary to belief, transitioning to a senior living community is more often than not, the best decision an aging adult can make. Every day, senior living residents defy aging stereotypes and can attest that most senior living concerns are misguided. That is why the British Columbia Seniors Living Association (BCSLA) would like to dispel five common senior living misconceptions.
Misconception #1: Seniors Deteriorate Quicker in Senior Living Residences
Studies have shown that one of the top factors in physical and psychological deterioration in aging adults is a lack of social engagement. At the BCSLA, our members understand the impact that socializing has on preventing dementia and mental illness.
Living in the same building or community as so many fellow retirees who share similar hobbies, interests, and lifestyles, offers endless opportunities to improve longevity!
Misconception #2: It’s Too Expensive
Take it from the Financial Posts’ Ted Rechtshaffen; retirement residences are, “not nearly as much as you might think.” Many seniors see the initial price tag but forget the services, safety, and accessibility they’re getting with the cost. Aging is inevitable, and with aging, adaptations are required to continue living the same lifestyle as a homeowner. For example, you may no longer be able to cut and fertilize your grass, so you will have to hire a gardener at about $80 per visit. Or, you may no longer want to risk taking the stairs to your bedroom so you will have to install a stairlift at $3,000 plus maintenance.
On top of that, the convenience of living in a residence close to amenities cuts down on travel costs or having an in-house nurse for consultation cuts down on doctor visits. With the quality services and time saved, senior living is an easy financial choice in retirement.
Misconception #3: Residences Don’t Feel Like Home
Although our BCSLA Seal of Approval holds our members to high standards of safety and services provided to residents and their families, we know that making a place feel like home cannot be measured. This is an aspect that we’re proud to say our members operate knowing home is a unique feeling to each and every resident. Offering ways to include family and friends, customize programs and suites, and provide quality social programs allows the resident to build the community the way he/she wants it.
Misconception #4: Seniors Can’t Have At-Home Care in Independent Living
Independent living is just as it states – independent. This means your home inside an independent living residence is considered no different than the house you own or the condo you rent. As long as you can continue to live without the requirement of 24hr care, you qualify to live in an independent living residence.
At-home care can simply be assisting your recovery after surgery or supporting you through a particular illness. Our trusted service providers are great resources to take advantage of in your times of need, whether you’re in a senior living residence or not.
Misconception #5: Letting Your Parent Move into a Retirement Residence is Abandoning Them
This is a sensitive misconception that most don’t want to talk about but happens to be the most common concern of all. For a while, senior living has been known as a place seniors go when they do not have family or when they’re “abandoned.” It could not be further from the truth. As a caregiver, helping a loved one make the decision that’s right for both of you is the best thing you can do.
Senior living residences are built to bring vitality to seniors and allow for a vibrant retirement. If you’re considering a senior living community for yourself or a loved one, the British Columbia Senior Living Association has a member directory with over 175 members committed to a brighter and better future for the senior living industry!
